Ciao Trizek (WMF), welcome to the Italian Wikipedia!

Thank you for participating in this community project. We would like to give you some information that may be helpful:

Editing pages here

  • If you want to experiment, we have a sandbox (pagina della prove), like other wikis.
  • If you want to make a careful start editing in Italian, try to expand some of our stubs.
  • Take care when editing someone else's work. Registered users can change the name of an article by using "sposta". This method of renaming keeps the history (cronologia) of a page intact.

Information in Italian

  • More information (in Italian) can be found in our help index page and the wikiquette page.
  • The Wikipedia:Bar is the Italian equivalent of the Village Pump on the English Wikipedia. Questions in Italian will be answered the most quickly. To sign messages, use four tildes: ~~~~

Again, welcome!

Configuration

modifica

Hi Trizek, thank you for fixing that.

There's still an issue in MediaWiki:GrowthExperimentsConfig.json: GEHelpPanelAskMentor should be setted as false, as we would prefer to direct those questions to the help desk, at least for now. --ValeJappo (msg) 14:46, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi

Hello @ValeJappo, the change is done.
To be clear, the questions posted at the Help desk will only be questions asked through the help panel. Questions asked from the Homepage will go the the mentors. Trizek (WMF) (msg) 14:49, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Yes, that is completely clear. We would like to avoid, at least for now, to fill the mentor with questions.
Thank you for all of your kind work, I appreciate it :) --ValeJappo (msg) 14:50, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
I am still seeing the button to ask questions to my mentor. Is it matter of time, or there is an issue? --ValeJappo (msg) 14:54, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Where do you see this? --Trizek (WMF) (msg) 14:56, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Screenshot at phab:F34687197 --ValeJappo (msg) 15:03, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
I tested on my side.
I have the link going to the help panel on articles, on Wikipedia namespace, on Aiuto namespace, on my userpage...
But if I open the help panel at my talk page, I have access to my mentor. I'm checking. --Trizek (WMF) (msg) 15:13, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
@ValeJappo, found it! You mentor is . We have observed that mentees are trying to contact their mentor by posting on their own talk page. As a consequence, we offer a link to the mentor talk page when people are on their own talk page. It is perfectly normal. :) --Trizek (WMF) (msg) 15:19, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Thank you!
Wow, I didn't expected you to add parser functions like {{#mentor:}}. This could be really useful. Are there other functions added by your extension? Is that documentated? --ValeJappo (msg) 15:23, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Have a look at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth/FAQ#magicword, you may find some other surprises there. ;) Trizek (WMF) (msg) 15:56, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Thank you, I have some final questions, then:
  1. When newcomers create a new account, (if they are within the 80% percent of users who will get the features enabled by default), will they be able to aceess the homepage by clicking on their username, or do they have to enable it?
  2. Will they be aknowledged about the existance of the homepage?
  3. How long will the A/B test last on our wiki? Will we be able to ask to stop it (and so enable the features for 100% of newcomers)?
I'm asking this because we were thinking about merging our current tutorship programme with growth experiments' mentorship. We can't do this if 20% of newcomers doasen't have those features enabled.
An alternative I would like you to talk about will be creating a special page to easily enable those features; also, a magic word returning 1 or 0 depending if the current user do have those features enabled will be useful.
  4. Currently, the newcomer task tag's label is "Attività per i nuovi utenti"; would linking it to a help page be possible? It's currently happening with newcomer task add link.
  5. In translatewiki:MediaWiki:Growthexperiments-homepage-mentorship-questionreview-header/it, $3 becomes a link to the mentor's talk page; it's label is "Pagina di discussione del tuo mentore", but the first charachter shouldn't be capitalized. Unfortunately, I'm not able to find the message linked to that label in order to fix it.
  6. When I try to change the tasks' diffculty, the 'create new articles' checkbox is disabled. Will it remain disabled forever?
Thank you! --ValeJappo (msg) 17:03, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
P.S. I noticed that now the help panel makes me ask questions in the help desk even if I'm in talk pages --ValeJappo (msg) 17:26, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
@ValeJappo, my replies:
  1. When they create th account, they are directed to the Homepage after filling in the survey. They also get an indication about how to return to their homepage.
  2. What do you mean by "aknowledged about the existance of the homepage"?
  3. The A/B test's end hasn't been decided yet. I note the blocker you have regarding the mentoring system you have, which is an argument to change the configuration of the A/B test.
  4. Where is it? I can't find it on the homepage.
  5. You can edit the concerned message directly at translatewiki. I think we should document it a bit better.
  6. Not forever, but we don't have any plans about it. The goal of this greyed box is to invite users to do all other kind of tasks.

Regarding the help panel making you asking questions in the help desk when ou are on a talk page: it is normal. Asking questions will go the the help desk, except when you are on your talk page. In this case, they go to the mentor talk page.
Speaking of mentor, you can imagine to change the welcome message that is automatically distributed so that it is signed by the mentor. {{#mentor}} can help there. Also, French Wikipedia has a template to display the mentor name easily; could be useful for you as well.
Trizek (WMF) (msg) 19:51, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Thank you.
Probably there is something wrong: before, when I wrote you, I saw the button to ask a question to my mentor, even if I were on your talk page. Currently, I can see it neither on yours nor on mine, it always points to the help desk.
Should I open a new task about this? --ValeJappo (msg) 19:58, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
@ValeJappo, yes, please do, with details on how to reproduce it. We need to investigate this. --Trizek (WMF) (msg) 20:02, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
I am thinking about what could have changed:
  • we changed the configuration, and made the help panel direct questions to the help panel
  • I changed mentor (setted myself as mentor)
Before opening a new task, could you please try setting me as mentor of yours? (manual mentor list) This could be the cause of the issue. Thanks! --ValeJappo (msg) 20:09, 13 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
@ValeJappo, sorry, but as a WMF staff, I can't add myself to mentors lists. Maybe @Sannita would help there? --Trizek (WMF) (msg) 13:42, 15 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
Hi, I noticed that you haven't replied to one of my previous questions:
  • When newcomers create a new account, (if they are within the 80% percent of users who will get the features enabled by default), will they be able to aceess the homepage by clicking on their username, or do they have to enable that option?
Thnak you! --ValeJappo (msg) 21:12, 18 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
@ValeJappo, the link on the username is automatically set. --Trizek (WMF) (msg) 15:32, 19 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi
[@ Trizek (WMF)] I'll see what I can do asap! --Sannita - L'admin (a piede) libero 15:26, 19 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi

Reassign user's mentees

Hi, could you please reassign Pierpao's mentees? Thank you! --ValeJappo (msg) 15:02, 27 ott 2021 (CEST)Rispondi

Update

modifica

Hi, just wanting to let you know that we decided to change our mentorship program (what on frwiki is called fr:Wikipédia:Parrainage) in order to fully take advatage of Growth features! --ValeJappo (msg) 08:20, 19 mar 2022 (CET)Rispondi

Hi @ValeJappo! Thank you for the news! :) Let me know how can I help you there. From a volunteer perspective, switching from Wikipédia:Parrainage to a more direct way to reach at newcomers is something no one regrets now. Trizek (WMF) (msg) 17:07, 21 mar 2022 (CET)Rispondi
