Descrizione Australian War Memorial photo P02482.016. Morotai, Netherlands East Indies. Brigadier General McNaught (second from right) of the US Army's 93rd Division, escorts Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Ishii (third from right), Commander of the 32nd Division and all other Japanese Armed Forces on Halmahera Island, ashore at the wharf. Lt Gen Ishii was accompanied by four high ranking Japanese Army and Navy Officers, two junior Officers (one an interpreter) and two other ranks personnel. Lt Gen Ishii and his party met with Major General Harry H. Johnson, Commander of the 93rd Division and all US installation on Morotai, in the Morotai Channel to discuss formal surrender arrangements. This was the first peaceful face to face meeting with Japanese Armed Forces. After these discussions, the Japanese party was escorted to Morotai for the formal surrender ceremony
